IMPORTANT UPDATE

The temporary swimming pool at Shepherds Spring Lane in Andover is now open at last – Swimming Club will start from Monday 30th October.

If you haven’t received an email detailing revised session times and club fees, then please contact membership.aswpc@gmail.com.

It’s important that we have up-to-date information for all members, so please can parents (or members over age 18) print, complete and sign the Member Information Form below (one per swimmer) and bring it to the pool next week.  Don’t worry if you aren’t able to print at home – we’ll have some blank forms at the pool.

Please ensure swimmers arrive in plenty of time for their sessions, with goggles and any other kit already adjusted and ready for use.  For all sessions of 60 minutes or longer, we expect everyone to bring a drink.

See you next week …….

Sessions update for this week and next

A reminder of swimming sessions for this week and next as there are a few changes to normal:

Romsey is on for this Tuesday (10th) and next Tuesday (17th)

Basingstoke is on for this Saturday (14th) with both squads and Baracudas 5-6pm  (using both pools) and teaching 6-7pm (in training pool only).

There is no other club swimming planned until we start back in Andover Temporary Pool from Monday 30th October (after Half Term).

October – No Club Fees!

Whilst the announcement about the temporary pool is completely outside of our control, we understand and share the frustration you may feel.  In recognition of your continued patience and support through what is very challenging circumstances, and the fact that we may only be able to offer limited sessions during the coming month, the club have decided to waive all club fees for the month of October.

Therefore no payment is due for October, and the new club fees (as advised to you over the summer via email from contact@andoverswimming.co.uk) should now start with effect from November.  For those who may be unable to stop payments which are due to be made in early October, we will arrange refunds in due course.

Please look out for other updates as we transition to the temporary pool later this month.

Once again many thanks for your continuing support.

Update on next week swimming sessions & gala

We have had some challenges to get appropriate teaching support for the session at The Rapids on Tuesday 3rd October (6-7pm) so regrettably we are having to cancel this one.
Also due to other commitments we are not now able to field a squad for the Gala at Woking on Saturday 7th October.  Please accept our apologies to those swimmers who had committed to being part of the team, there will be other opportunities in the future.  However, we do have time at The Aquadrome between 5 and 6pm so we are aiming to run a one hour competitive squad session for those that can make it.  For Learn to Compete due to teacher shortage we can only run 6-7pm; those swimmers who normally attend 7-8pm can come to the 5-6pm session which is held in the main pool.
All swimmers can use the lagoon for a short period after their session on Saturday!

Temporary Pool Update

We have heard that handover of the the temporary pool will be delayed until 20th October (Test Valley press release here.) Whilst we are of course disappointed we can’t get started in the pool straight away, the interim arrangements at Romsey and Aquadrome have been extended until the new pool opens to the public.

For The Aquadrome there is some slight tweaking to timing:

  • Sat 7th October – 6-8pm Learner Pool; 5-6pm Main Pool
  • Sat 14th October – 6-8pm Learner Pool; 5-6pm Main Pool
  • Sat 21st October – 6-8pm Learner Pool; 5-7pm Main Pool
  • Sat 28th October – 6-8pm Learner Pool; 5-6pm Main Pool

We are hoping the last two sessions won’t be needed but are arranged just in case!

We’ll keep you up to date on any changes.

IMPORTANT! Saturday Swim Arrangements

This Saturday 23rd September there will be no “Arena Squad” training (5-7pm) as most swimmers should be competing at the Gala being held at Waterlooville. The usual “Learn to Compete” sessions from 6-8pm will go ahead as usual. On Saturday 30th September, we are competing at the Gala being held at The Aquadrome however for “Arena Squad” members we will run an hour session between 5 and 6pm which will be good warm-up for the main event to follow. The “Learn to Compete” sessions (6-8pm) will go ahead as normal.

Andover Temporary Pool is under construction!

Thank you to all those swimmers and parents who have stuck by the Club over the last few months in what can only be described as challenging times.

The vast majority of feedback has been positive despite the nomadic nature of our Club at present. Sessions at The Aquadrome, QMC and The Rapids have been well attended in the main which has been very encouraging. We should also pass on sincere thanks to all the volunteers who have helped either swim teaching or behind the scenes, as well as our two established coaches. There are never enough people to help so please step forward, your Club does need you.

Whilst we have been maintaining a swimming programme, in the background the Club has been having a number of discussions and meetings with both Test Valley Borough Council and Places for People (PfP) particularly about what happens when the temporary pool is available. As a reminder the temporary pool will be a 25m 4 lane pool with a constant depth of 1.2m, so the pressure on water time from a number of sources will be acute.

The good news is that the provisional pool timetable allocates time to the Club on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, all evenings. There is also scope to do early mornings if there is enough demand and help available! At the moment we are pulling together what sessions can be held in the allocated times we have discussed with PfP and while some of the timings are not ideal there are some that are great. Please watch out for more information on proposed session times.

At the moment the expectation is that the temporary pool will be available from September although this has not yet been formally confirmed. One other key update is that PfP’s preferred method of allocating and charging for pool time is for the Club to be invoiced for all sessions agreed, billed monthly in advance, this is different to the previous model at the old leisure centre operated by Valley Leisure. This means that the Club’s charging structure will have to change, Rather than paying a small monthly fee to the Club and then paying entry to the leisure operator for any other session attended, the fee that the Club will need to charge will be fully inclusive of the sessions the swimmer attends. The payment structure will move to a tiered structure which will cover 1 swim, 2 swims or 3 or more swims. This means that the current £16 fee which only covered the Monday Club Night session previously will increase with higher amounts payable for more swim sessions attended. However, in mitigation of this swimmers will no longer need to pay entry or be a member of the leisure operator for any swim club session attended. This will be a much simpler model and easier to follow. The aim will be to keep the monthly fee as low as possible but inevitably fees will need to be higher to cover the costs of operating the Club. Full details of the new charging structure along with initial proposals for allocated swim sessions will be issued shortly.

In the meantime, once again thank you for supporting ASWPC – it is a volunteer run Club so always needs new faces and help. If you are interested in helping out, even in a small way, please reply to this mail or talk to one of the committee.

For those taking a well-earned break over the Summer, enjoy, have fun and be raring to go again in September!
